Fast Real Street VL - Dominic's Turbo powered Calais
The Project Mission: To go faster than before & remain in 100% street trim. NOTE: Street Trim = street tyres, street quiet exhaust, street registered, street driveable, factory 3EA ECU, spare tyre, street , street, street, street, street.
Statistics: Mildly grumpy purr at 850rpm, Starts to come up on boost by 2400rpm, Swings with a smile to 7000rpm with it's freshened up bottom end Spins it's tyres in top at 100kms on full boost (street rubber) Has all the trimmings, e.g. seats, parcel shelf, stereo, factory dash + all Calais options etc. ********** This car started it's life walking down the quarter mile naturally aspirated in a 16.9 @ whatever MPH. Stage 1: Configuration stock Stock ECU, MAF & Injectors BP Premium Unleaded Fuel ********** It's second street meet @ WSID 2/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 13.5 @ 101MPH on 10psi boost Stage 2: Configuration 300 Fitted all the good bits from the Maroon Berlina plus Fresh street Rubber, 3.45 diff gears & revised tailshaft Engine Oil cooler E-Boost 2, w/3psi 4step boost switching (thanks to Richard from Turbosmart) Improved fuel supply system Minor calibration update to the stock 3EA ECU ********** It's Third street meet @ WSID 3/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 12.2 @ 116MPH using Stage 3: Configuration 400 re-adjusted Boost Steppings Not even squealling the rear 225's yet Boost steps needing a little more aggression for next time out. We might even rev it out past 5800 in top after an injector upgrade More to come for this Week if the weather keeps nice & dry!!. More e-boost2 fine tuning to dial in, we expect some improvement in MPH & ET's with an average drivers reaction reaction time of 0.031 we couldn't ask for a better streeter But we'll expect it!! *********** It's Fourth day out Andra saturday @ WSID 4/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 12.4 @ 116MPH using Stage 4: Configuration 400 Upgraded to a Tested set of 550cc's Re-Calibrated the stock ECU program to match larger injectors re-adjusted Boost Steppings still not squealling the rear 225's Boost steps needing a little more aggression for next time out. Should see 6000 on the shift comfortably
*********** It's Fourth Street Meet @ WSID 6/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 12.1 @ 117.5MPH Stage 4: Configuration 400 re-adjusted Boost Steppings still not squealling the rear Nankang 225's Boost steps needing a little more aggression for next time out. Should see 6400 on the shift comfortably It's amazing what a Standard 3EA ECU & upgraded MAF can do in a full manualised Modified VL!
*********** It's next Street Meet @ WSID 6/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 11.6 @ 119MPH Stage 4: Configuration 420 re-adjusted Boost Steppings squealled the tyres alot more this time all the way to 100 clicks We had to fit the slicks for safety as the Nankangs gave up hugging the track Little more boost off the line now & come see the front end twist up!! with the extra weight in the Calais we need to make more power. Another set of injectors & a little more boost should do the trick!
It's next Street Meet @ WSID 22/8/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 12.1 @ 119.3MPH Stage 5: Configuration 420 re-adjusted Boost Steppings Little more boost at the top end!! A set of 1000cc Injectors, Enough Fuel for 7200 MM800 Mega Mass Air Flow Meter Kit installed to reduce intake restriction & support more power. Purring even more smoother than with the Z32MAF A Differential Ratio increase to 3.1's Back to the 225x60 Nankangs to test traction with 3.1's Gave the driver a little more trouble to keep in line but got the extra top end we were looking for. The stock ECU can be tuned even further to handle more adjustments, We think there's more in it yet !!
It's next Street Meet @ WSID 29/8/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 12.1 @ 120.20MPH Stage 5: Configuration 430 re-adjusted Boost Steppings Still on 225x60 street Nankangs Mega MAF kit dialed in almost perfect after a few runs Still giving the driver trouble to keep in line but got the extra top end speed we were after.
It's next Street Meet @ WSID 19/09/2012 came back with a 1/4 pass of 12.0's @ 121.94MPH Stage 5: Configuration 440 re-adjusted Boost Steppings Still on 225x60 street Nankangs Tweaked the Lambda readings a little A little more top end speed this time. Extremely happy as the Heavier Calais on Nankangs is now faster than the old berlina on slicks which can only mean more power!!
** To see this street driven cruiser in race against some drag only cars is awsome. Green is for Go, not spool up, have snack, read the newspaper, then GO. you don't quite have a 9 second car if it gets can 't beat a streeter running flat 12's !!
Future Plans: NOW completed & JPS owned Refreshed Bottom End w/Billet Crank, Twin Cam head, Big Camtech Solid camshafts, Tomei Adjustable Cam gears, ARP mains, heads & camcap studs Precision turbo, N1 Pump w/billet gears 6x ITB's, Billet Fuel Rail, RDG Engineering's Custom High Volume baffled oil sump
with all rings, mains, big ends, clearanced & installed. Engine almost completed now, should be back on the track soon.
Still running a Standard ECU but this time it will be an RB20DET version recalibrated to suit the multi-coil setup as we couldn't keep the trusty 3EA for this job.
7/12/14 - Fired up & Gave it a little hit on the road to Appin installed Engine, fitted the LS2 Coils, Remapped ECU first click & a little squirt of the throttle & the sweet sounds of hard work payed off.
Well, for its first drive the engine seemed comfortable with it's new parts. Spool Billet Crank, CP custom height pistons, Engine wiring loom made plug'n'play by JPS LS2 Coil pack bracket & Wiring loom by JPS Highly Modified RB26 Cylinder Head by JPS RB20DET ECU, Recalibrated NIStune by JPS. EBoost 2 is controlling wastegate well now with all the right plumbing, FMIC Redesigned by JPS & Modified by Ariel @ Redstar Fab, 3.5" Dump w/2" gate piping by JPS is sweet combination to be plumbed back in when the full 3.5" is installed. We've found that 1st, 2nd or 3rd off the line just blows the tyres so dialing back the initial 17psi boost is in order in EB2. This full weight Calais has traction issues over 110km/h when you stand on it, some gentle guidance almost keeps it on track but throttle control is paramount. Looking forward to getting back to the next Race-4-Real on the 7/1/15 to get the engine's first time slip.
